Remembering Carl
A life centred on the people he loved.
Carl MacKinnon grew up in Sydney, Nova Scotia. Together with his wife, Diane, he raised four children, and family remained at the heart of everything he did. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, Carl was known for his warmth, quiet humour and the way he made people feel genuinely welcome.
He was a steady source of encouragement and reassurance, someone who could always be counted on to listen, help and show up. His family remembers his compassion, his determination and a simple outlook on life he lived by.
“Do the hard things.”
The Scholarship
An annual award with a personal purpose.
Carl lived with complicated diabetes for much of his life. It affected his day-to-day life and that of his family, but it was never the whole of who he was. His experience is the inspiration behind this scholarship.
The award is intended to recognize a graduating student whose life has been affected by diabetes, personally or through a loved one, while reflecting qualities Carl valued: kindness, character and perseverance.
